Overview

Vehicle registrations expire on an assigned month based on your surname. You can look up your expiry date on the registration expiry date chart or by checking your registration certificate. As of January 1, 2021, expiry stickers are no longer required on licence plates.

There are 3 options to renew your registration.

Renew online

The online site can only be used if you are renewing your registration without changes. If you require any changes to your registration, for example a name or address change, you must apply for the renewal in person at a registry agent office.

Online vehicle registration renewals require a verified Alberta.ca Account. Allow 10 business days after signing up for an account to receive your activation code in the mail to finalize your verification before completing your online registration renewal.

If you have any outstanding fines, you will not be able to renew your registration online. If you choose to pay your fines online first, you must wait a couple business days for the payment to process before you can renew online.

To renew online, you will need:

  • verified Alberta.ca Account
  • vehicle registration certificate
  • insurance details from your pink card
  • credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express)
  • current web browser (Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Firefox, Chrome or Safari)

Start your online registration renewal

Renew by mail

To renew your passenger vehicle and motorcycle registration by mail, complete one of the mail-in renewal applications below. If you have any outstanding fines, changes to your registration (for example your name or address), you must apply for the renewal in person at a registry agent office.

You should only use the mail-in renewal option if your registration expires in 30 days or more to allow time for mailing. If your registration will expire in less than 30 days from the expiry on your registration, renew your registration in person or online.

To renew by mail, you will need to:

  • Complete one of the mail-in renewal forms below, including the insurance declaration and signatures from all registrants, provide payment (cheque or money order)

To renew your vehicle registration in person, visit any authorized Alberta Registry Agent.

To renew in person, you will need:

  • driver’s licence
  • proof of insurance (‘pink card’)
  • vehicle registration certificate (optional)

Global economic uncertainty, lower oil prices and rapid population growth are placing real pressure on Alberta’s finances and public services.

\n\n

Alberta is feeling extreme pressures. Unprecedented growth in recent years has stretched essential service capacities beyond what the system is able to manage. More people mean Alberta needs more classrooms, more hospital capacity, more infrastructure and more support systems – all at a time when non-renewable resource revenue is declining. These pressures are not only increasing the deficit, but also pushing the province to project three years of substantial deficits, if today’s revenue and expense projections hold.

\n\n

If passed, Budget 2026 includes deficits of $9.4 billion, $7.6 billion and $6.9 billion over the next three years.

\n\n

To respond to growing fiscal pressure, Budget 2026 makes careful investments while strengthening revenue through economic development, reinvesting in the Heritage Fund, investing in our public service, building a stronger workforce and ensuring everyone pays their fair share.

\n\n

With $34.4 billion in total expense for the health system, Budget 2026 supports more surgeries, strengthens access to front-line family doctors and nurse practitioners and adds hundreds of treatment beds for people with mental health and addiction issues.

\n\n

If passed, Budget 2026 invests $10.8 billion in the education system, a 7.2 per cent increase over 2025-26. This investment will help hire more teachers and educational assistants to support growing classes and classroom complexity. Budget 2026 is also investing $3.3 billion over three years into building educational infrastructure across the province.

In 2026-27, Alberta’s economy and fiscal outlook continue to face challenges from the shifting global economic landscape. With the U.S. introducing broad tariffs last year, trade uncertainty and low oil prices will continue to slow growth this year. The province’s real GDP is forecast to slow to 1.8 per cent. A slowdown in population growth will weigh on activity, but will also take the pressure off the labour market and make it easier for Albertans to find good jobs. Inflation is forecast to remain near two per cent, which will help families manage everyday costs and provide relief for household budgets.

Even with weaker oil prices, Alberta’s energy sector continues to be a source of strength. Alberta’s energy industry is producing and selling to more markets around the world. Manufacturing is starting to rebound after last year’s trade challenges, and businesses are expected to slowly start investing again as uncertainty settles.

\n\n

Despite signs of recovery, broader economic pressures highlight the need for careful planning and decisive action to keep Alberta on a steady path. When conditions tighten, Alberta’s government does not walk away from the challenge. Alberta’s government is focused on what matters, protecting what counts, acting responsibly and charting a steady path forward for the province.

Budget 2026 invests:

  • $10.8 billion in operating expenses for education, an increase of 7.2 per cent from 2025-26, will support the hiring of at least 3,000 new teachers and 1,500 new educational assistants over three years.
    • \n\t
  • $3.3 billion for infrastructure funding will support the work to build and modernize 161 schools, including the fast-tracking of 40 new school projects this year.
    • \n\t
  • $34.4 billion in total expense across the health-care system, an increase of $1.9 billion or 5.8 per cent from the 2025-26 forecast, including:\n\t
      \n\t\t
    • $13.8 billion in Hospital and Surgical Health Services, including $525-million to complete 50,000 additional surgeries.
      • \n\t\t
    • $5.9 billion for Assisted Living and Social Services, to support continuing care, assisted living services and seniors.

    • $2 billion for Mental Health and Addiction.\n\t\t

      • This will help prioritize front-line addiction treatment and psychiatric care and build compassionate intervention centres and mental health facilities for youth.

  • The province is also continuing to grow the Heritage Fund for what matters most: saving for the future and securing long-term growth and financial stability.\n\t

    • The fund is expected to grow to about $34 billion by the end of 2026-27, up from $31.5 billion from the 2025-26 second-quarter fiscal update.
      • \n\t\t
    • A renewed Heritage Fund of $250 billion by 2050 will turn Alberta’s resource strength into lasting financial security through strategic, large-scale investments in the good years, and earnings that grow year-over-year, lessening the province’s future reliance on natural resource revenues.

  • Budget 2026’s Capital Plan includes $28.3 billion over three years, an increase of $2.2 billion or eight per cent from Budget 2025. It will build what matters in the province: schools, hospitals, roads and bridges in the province.\n\t

    • The decrease in 2026-27 comes mainly from a $3.1 billion drop in non-renewable resource revenue, driven by an anticipated decline in oil prices.
      • \n\t\t
    • Revenue from non-renewable resources is forecast at $13.2 billion in 2026-27, compared to the $16.3 billion forecast for 2025-26 third quarter forecast.
      • \n\t\t
    • Revenue from personal income taxes is estimated at $15.9 billion in 2026-27, an increase of $1.2 billion from the 2025-26 third quarter forecast, growing in line with personal incomes and reaching $17.7 billion in 2028-29.
      • \n\t\t
    • Corporate income tax revenue is estimated at $7.3 billion in 2026-27, down $0.1 billion from the third-quarter forecast for 2025-26,\n\t\t

      • However, it is up from Budget 2025, driven by stronger growth in corporate profits despite ongoing trade uncertainty.

Le budget pour 2026 se concentre sur ce qui compte, fait des choix disciplinés et prend des mesures décisives.

L’incertitude économique mondiale, la baisse des prix du pétrole et la croissance rapide de la population exercent des pressions bien réelles sur les finances et les services publics de l’Alberta.

\n\n

L’Alberta subit des pressions extrêmes. La croissance sans précédent de ces dernières années a étiré les capacités des services essentiels au-delà de ce que le système est capable d’encaisser. L’augmentation de la population signifie que l’Alberta a besoin de plus de salles de classe, de plus de capacité hospitalière, de plus d’infrastructures et de plus de systèmes de soutien, tout cela à un moment où les revenus des ressources non renouvelables sont en baisse. Ces pressions ne font pas qu’augmenter le déficit, elles poussent aussi la province à prévoir trois années de déficits substantiels, si les prévisions de revenus et de dépenses actuelles se concrétisent.

\n\n

S’il est adopté, le budget pour 2026 prévoit des déficits de 9,4 milliards de dollars, 7,6 milliards de dollars et 6,9 milliards de dollars au cours des trois prochaines années.

\n\n

Pour répondre à la pression fiscale croissante, le budget pour 2026 fait des investissements prudents tout en renforçant les recettes grâce au développement économique, en réinvestissant dans le Fonds du patrimoine, en investissant dans notre fonction publique, en renforçant la main-d’œuvre et en veillant à ce que chacun paie sa juste part.

\n\n

Le budget pour 2026, qui prévoit une enveloppe de 34,4 milliards de dollars de dépenses totales pour le système de santé, augmentera le nombre d’opérations, renforcera l’accès aux médecins de famille de première ligne et aux infirmières praticiennes et ajoutera des centaines de lits pour les personnes ayant des problèmes de santé mentale et de dépendance.

\n\n

S’il est adopté, le budget pour 2026 investira 10,8 milliards de dollars dans le système d’éducation, soit une augmentation de 7,2 % par rapport à 2025-2026. Cet investissement permettra d’embaucher davantage d’enseignants et d’assistants pédagogiques afin de soutenir les classes, d’une taille et d’une complexité toujours plus grandes. Le budget pour 2026 investit également 3,3 milliards de dollars sur trois ans dans la construction d’infrastructures d’éducation dans toute la province.

En 2026-2027, l’économie et les perspectives financières de l’Alberta continuent de faire face aux défis posés par l’évolution du paysage économique mondial. Les États-Unis ayant introduit des droits de douane à grande échelle l’année dernière, l’incertitude commerciale et la faiblesse des prix du pétrole continueront à ralentir la croissance cette année. Le PIB réel de la province devrait ralentir pour atteindre 1,8 %. Un ralentissement de la croissance démographique pèsera sur l’activité, mais il allégera également la pression sur le marché du travail et permettra aux Albertains et Albertaines de trouver plus facilement de bons emplois. L’inflation devrait rester proche de 2 %, ce qui aidera les familles à gérer les coûts quotidiens et offrira un certain répit aux ménages. 

\n\n

Même avec des prix du pétrole plus faibles, le secteur énergétique de l’Alberta continue d’être une source de force. L’industrie énergétique de l’Alberta produit et vend sur davantage de marchés dans le monde. Le secteur manufacturier commence à se redresser après les difficultés commerciales de l’année dernière, et les entreprises devraient lentement recommencer à investir à mesure que l’incertitude se dissipe.

Malgré les signes de reprise, les pressions économiques générales soulignent la nécessité d’une planification minutieuse et d’une action décisive pour que l’Alberta maintienne le cap. Lorsque les conditions se durcissent, le gouvernement de l’Alberta ne recule pas devant le défi. Le gouvernement de l’Alberta se concentre sur ce qui est important, protège ce qui compte, agit de façon responsable et trace une voie stable pour la province.

Le budget pour 2026 prévoit les investissements suivants :

  • des fonds de 10,8 milliards de dollars en dépenses d’exploitation pour l’éducation, soit une augmentation de 7,2 % par rapport à 2025-2026; cette somme servira à l’embauche d’au moins 3 000 nouveaux enseignants et 1 500 nouveaux aides-élèves sur trois ans;
    • \n\t
  • une somme de 3,3 milliards de dollars pour le financement des infrastructures; ces fonds seront consacrés aux travaux de construction et de modernisation pour 161 écoles, y compris l’accélération de 40 projets pour la création de nouvelles écoles cette année;
    • \n\t
  • une enveloppe de 34,4 milliards de dollars de dépenses totales dans l’ensemble du système de santé, soit une augmentation de 1,9 milliard de dollars ou 5,8 % par rapport aux prévisions pour 2025-2026, dont :\n\t

    • 13,8 milliards de dollars pour les services de santé hospitaliers et opératoires, dont 525 millions de dollars pour réaliser 50 000 opérations supplémentaires;
      • \n\t\t
    • 5,9 milliards de dollars pour l’aide à la vie autonome et les services sociaux, pour soutenir les soins continus, les services d’aide à la vie autonome et les services aux personnes âgées;
      • \n\t\t
    • 2 milliards de dollars pour la santé mentale et le traitement des dépendances;\n\t\t

      • ces investissements permettront de donner la priorité au traitement des dépendances et aux soins psychiatriques de première ligne, ainsi que de construire des centres d’intervention offrant une approche basée sur la compassion et des établissements de santé mentale pour les jeunes.

  • La province continue également de faire croître le Fonds du patrimoine pour ce qui compte le plus : épargner pour l’avenir et assurer une croissance et une stabilité financière à long terme.\n\t

    • Le Fonds devrait croître pour atteindre environ 34 milliards de dollars d’ici la fin de 2026-2027, contre 31,5 milliards de dollars d’après la mise à jour financière du deuxième trimestre de 2025-2026.

    • Le Fonds du patrimoine renouvelé, qui devrait contenir 250 milliards de dollars d’ici 2050, transformera la force des ressources de l’Alberta en une sécurité financière durable grâce à des investissements stratégiques à grande échelle dans les bonnes années, et à des bénéfices qui augmentent d’année en année, diminuant ainsi la dépendance future de la province aux revenus des ressources naturelles.

    • La diminution en 2026-2027 provient principalement d’une baisse de 3,1 milliards de dollars des recettes provenant des ressources non renouvelables, en raison d’une baisse anticipée des prix du pétrole.

    • Les recettes provenant des ressources non renouvelables devraient s’élever à 13,2 milliards de dollars en 2026-2027, contre 16,3 milliards de dollars prévus au troisième trimestre de 2025-2026.
